We opted for the less strenuous Campground trail since we needed it to be a day hike and were worried that the recommended Thunderbolt loop would take us too much time to hike.
The GPS address is: 30 Rockwell Road, Lanesborough, MA – however, you keep driving up the paved road until you get to the Campground parking lot. At 10:30am we were the only cars parked there, when we came back around 3:30, there were only two more cars there.
We encountered very few other hikers on the trail, and the summit was not crowded at all. There are porta-potties at the summit.
The hike is mostly through wooded forest, and the summit is a very large area with lodging and the war memorial tower (which is still closed).
The hike took us 4 1/2 hours and was very manageable. Lot's of little wooden bridges to cross over small brooks. Very picturesque.
Also, on a side note – the bathrooms at the service centers along the Mass Turnpike are open as well. We thought they would be closed and were surprised to find them very clean and open to the public.
Overall, we had a great day!
