It took us two hours to reach Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. Therefore, we didn't start the hike until around 10am. It was cloudy but warm. The first mile was an easy hike on a narrow dirt trail with many zigzags. I read from a couple hiking logs that the place was buggy, so I brought a hiking hat with net. It was indeed very useful. Thanks for the advice!
Soon we reached the Memorial, where Robert Louis Stevenson and his wife Fanny Osbourne spent their honeymoon. I wondered whether they got a lot of bug bites! After the Memorial, the trail became rocky with steeper climbs until we reached a fire road. We turned left on the fire road. After a short hike, we were out of the woody area and had a great view of the mountains and valleys. We continued walking on the fire road. There were wildflowers, but not as plentiful. On our way up, we met two climbers at the Bubble Rock and several groups of hikers coming down from the opposite direction.
The clouds thinned and the sun shone through. It became hotter, making the last section of the trail to the summit more difficult. We reached the summit around 12:30pm. There were no other hikers on the summit! We had lunch there, thoroughly enjoying the magnificent view and the solitude.
Going down wasn't exactly easy because the trail was full of small gravel and very slippery. I slipped a few times. We could walk faster only when the sections of the trail were flat. There were still several hikers on their way up, and there was a different group of climbers at the Bubble Rock. It was completely sunny now and very warm. After we left the fire road, we still needed to hike through a section of treacherous trail until we reached the Memorial. After that, it's the same zigzagged dirt trail to reach the parking lot. We finally arrived at the parking lot shortly before 3pm to end today's hike.
This was our 5th peak. Only one more to go!
