My other title for this hike was “too legit to quit.” This was our official finisher hike so we were 100% committed to the summit.
Helping notes for hikers, pay $6 for campground parking and start the day early. We were ready for trailhead by 10-1030am and that’s honestly 2-3 hrs too late for easy arrival and parking. Helpful to know that you can 1) park legally at all turnoff points, 2) pay $6 cash or check at the campsites (Salamander Flats is about 1 mile from Timpooneke Trailhead).
For the actual hike, it was a great!!! It’s a long day on the trail, we finished in 7.5 hrs. Snow was not really an issue until arriving to the ascent to the saddle. We had to choose snow or scree rocks. We chose scree rocks for a more direct route but still ended up traversing a fair amount of snow to catch the trail again.
When you’re at the saddle, the fun begins (hehe). There’s some scrambling, switchbacks, a sneaky long distance to hit the summit. Just…keep…going. The view is worth it. The accomplishment is worth it. And heading down is way easier.
We’re happy to officially be done with 6/6 hikes for Utah. We’ll still do Deseret for another challenge and for me, this has been an amazing introduction to UT as a new resident.
Oh yeah, and mountain goats roam free all over!!!
