Mount Washington: April 8th, 2022
I started my way up to summit Mount Washington in Coos County, NH via the Cog Rail Trail. This was my Fourth Summit of Mount Washington for the Six Pack of Peaks: New England Challenge and Fourth Peak for 2022.
It was cloudy with some cold rains at lower elevations. Eventually the rains subsided and had some clouds break allowing for blue skies and sun to be seen. Clouds took over once again. Had light winds and was cool for much of the hike with occasional mist from low clouds. Trail was wet muddy with some ice and snow at lower elevations but as I got to higher elevations the trail was ice covered from previous thaws and refreeze. Definitely recommend good traction for the ice covered trails. I used spikes for much of this hike. I did bring snowshoes in case I did need them. I followed the Cog Railway up to Great Gulf Trail, crossing the Cog Railway, and followed it til I hit the Trinity Heights Connector Trail then up to summit. When was nearing summit winds had picked up and lots of cloud cover from low hanging clouds. Not much in the way of views expect for what was close by. No clear skies, sunshine or views of other peaks this trip.
I was at the summit long enough to take some pictures of the Mount Washington Observatory and other structures, and summit sign photo op. I then had a snack and a drink before heading back to the Trailhead.
It was beautiful to catch some views before clouds rolled back in, seeing the ice formations that covered the Railway, buildings, rocks and vegetation. It was definitely an amazing experience hiking with winterish conditions.
Definitely recommend this hike to others and worth the trip but one needs to be prepared.
