Mount Wilson 2024 – Head in the Stars – Solo Sunrise Hike
May 09, 2024
Excited to be back after the 2023 Mt Wilson that wasn't. Started at dawn with overcast skies. The trail was busy with morning runners & doggos buzzing by but things quieted down by First Water and I had the trail to myself after I reached Orchard Camp. The new bench that the boy scouts put in was a nice surprise – great spot for a mid hike break. I was eager to see how the trail had fared in general since the 2023 storm damage. A big thank you to the Sierra Madre trail maintenance volunteers who did an incredible job with the new wooden foot bridge and making the whole trail safe.
When rounded the corner to the summit, there was an unexpected drone operator and unmarked helicopter in the parking lot . Looked like they were surveying the area (electrical company? NFS? Observatory?) – couldn't find any info about it online.
The summit timing was perfect as I arrived just in time for the observatory complex to open. Had the whole place to myself. I enjoyed a quiet stroll through the grounds and geeking out on astronomy before heading back down. I also went over to the Sturtevant Trail lookout that I had missed last time – it's worth the micro detour – gorgeous mountain views above the clouds with the telescope domes in the background.
Head in the Stars – a perfect day on Wilson. ✨ 🔭
