Mount Wilson – a solo adventure in a galaxy far far away – 4 of 6

June 23, 2021

Yessss! I could hardly contain my excitement when the observatory grounds reopened to visitors last week.  I had been wanting to visit for years – I couldn't have asked for a more perfect combination of going on a scenic hike and having the opportunity to nerd out at the summit. ?

I was fortunate to have the whole trail to myself after the first mile or so, when folks on their morning run would turn around. It was incredibly peaceful – there was a lot of wildlife out and about. I even spotted a bobcat in the distance going about its daily routine. The steady, even climb to the summit was a perfect way to get into the zone over the 7+ mile / 5700ft ascent.

⚠️ PSA: don't touch! Poodle-Dog Bush sighting

I knew to steer clear of poison oak but I had never heard of the poisonous poodle dog bush. I was alerted to its existence in a PCT story I had happened to read recently. The deceivingly pretty purple flowered shrub was only growing through the last ~3/4 of a mile before the summit (after the last side trail junction – see map pic). The area was still bearing heavy burn scars from the most recent fire, offering perfect growing conditions for it as it was happily encroaching onto the trail. I was so focused on making sure that I didn't accidentally brush up against it that I almost missed the expansive views of downtown L.A. This last section of the trail eventually emerged onto the observatory's parking lot at the summit. I spent a few moments taking in the views and finding the USGS marker at the end of the lot, but there was no time to dawdle: I had an observatory to visit!

? Mt Wilson Observatory – a self-guided VIP tour

The museum, CHARA exhibit hall and 100-in telescope gallery were all opened to visitors… and to my surprise, completed deserted! No humans in sight (plenty of squirrels). I felt like a VIP visitor having the entire complex to myself. What a treat! I took my time exploring the grounds and reading about the history behind the telescopes, the innovations, the science and engineering…  All the displays were informative and very well curated. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Next up: Cucamonga

I could have easily spent more time there but had to make my way back down the mountain – it was time to head over to the Baldy area to setup camp for the night. Cucamonga planned first thing tomorrow!
