Mount Wilson via Sierra Madre is the original trail (since 1864) to go up the Mount Wilson Observatory. It is NO JOKE with its relentless climb as soon as you start—do not under estimate this hike. It is a difficult hike!
The trail is very well maintained with lots of wildflowers blooming this time. We started at 6 am with nice cool weather, but on our descent, we had lots of sun exposure and temp was about 95-96°. A LOT OF MOSQUITOES as well! So not only must bring sun protection, but also bug repellant and head net if you have it.
#cosmiccafe at @mtwilsonobservatory was open for lunch when we arrived. So we enjoyed a well deserved treat at the summit—hot dog, apple pie, sodas. So good! There is also a spigot of water to replenish your water for the hike down and clean toilets with running water!
📣HIKER’S NOTES: if you’re doing this hike, fuel up before the hike-eat breakfast, BRING AT LEAST 4L of hydration, bring electrolytes and high energy snacks.
For your safety, choose hikes at your level of ability or below. And, most importantly, MUST bring your own 10 essentials! Total 15 miles, 5,033’ total elevation gained.
