I've hiked Mt Baldy several times via the Baldy Bowl Trail and the Devil's Backbone Trail, but did not even know that the Register (Hell) Ridge Trail existed until this hike. The hike starts out on the same trail as the Baldy Bowl trail, but there is a trail junction that splits off at the top of the hill that is the start of Register Ridge Trail. The first part of the trail was very steep and I just assumed that it, at some point, would level out. Silly me. The entire trail from the trail junction up to where it merges with the Devil's Backbone Trail at the top is one non-stop steep trail without on level spot. It clearly is much shorter than both Baldy Bowl and Devil's Backbone, but your thighs and ankles pay the price. If you are looking for a good trail for training hikes, this is it. I'm glad I did it once, but from now on it is Baldy Bowl and Devil's Backbone for me.
