The night before our hike, we camped at Mt. Greylock Campsite Park. A great spot for drive-in camping, with water on-site and an electric box to plug in the car overnight. The people running it were very nice —would definitely recommend if you’re looking for somewhere to camp nearby.
This morning, we started our hike at around 10:45 and finished up around 3, with a nice long break for lunch and to admire the view and climb the tower at the top. We took South Bellows up and Gould back down, for about a 6.4 mile hike. South Bellows was the more well-marked and well-maintained of the two—we had to backtrack on Gould a few times to get back to the trail and it was slicker with more rubble-y rocks. Amazing views at the top, plus bathrooms and a lodge.
I hiked this with my husband and dog, and Rosie loved this one. It’s mostly in the forest rather than exposed past the tree line and she loves following the trail and dipping her paws in streams. It seemed pretty easy for her (she’s a 18 lb cockapoo with very short legs), even compared to the shorter (but steeper) Welch-Dickey trail we did last weekend.
I would definitely hike Mt. Greylock again, and maybe try out one of the many other trail options!
