Sunday 2/19 seven Bay Area Hikers took on Mt. St. Helena in the quest of summitting the 4328ft mountain and were victorious! The team actually summited four peaks to claim total victory on Sunday. St. Helena was the 2nd peak in my personal 6 peak challenge and will probably add a few other peaks too! More details below.

It was a crisp morning, but the weather was clear and sunny. As we drove in you could see hot air balloons rising and landing in the Napa Valley.

The team of hikers began at 830am and took the Stevenson Memorial Trail .75 tenths of a mile to the Mt. St. Helena Trail. Along this part of the trail the hikers went through the covered forest and passed by the Stevenston Memorial.

When the team connected with the Helena trail, they began to peel off a few layers of clothing because they were no longer in any real cover of the trees and were enjoying the warmth of the sun with a light breeze.

Now the hikers were on a service road up to the top. Along the way pictures were taken, stories told, and laughter was exchanged.  As they hiked the breeze began to pick up, but the sun kept them warm.

As they gained elevation you could see Mt. Diablo, Mt. Tam, San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and the snowcapped Sierra Nevada. But the big thrill was to be able to see Mt. Lassen, which is about 140 miles away.

We arrived at our first peak to climb. It is unnamed and to get to the top you must take a cut fire break to get to the top. The peak is on your right as you are heading up the St. Helena trait and reconnects on the other side.

Up and back down we went and then continued on to the summit of St. Helena.

As we began our final assent to the top the wind began to pick up and you could hear it whistling though all the radio tower antennas.

We all summited together and claimed victory! The 6 peaks flag was flown and then we sought cover from the wind behind one of the radio tower buildings for lunch. 3 of the group headed back early and did not stay for lunch and it was left up to the remaining 4 hikers to finish the quest.

After lunch we were off to another peak where a local radio station KGO has a tower and there is a radar on top. Again, victory was claimed and then we set our sights on the last peak.

Again, the peak was conquered, and the team headed down.  We passed a popular rock-climbing point “The Bubble” which had many climbers on it.

We proceeded on down and took the Silverado Mine Trail back down to the Stevenson Memorial. We were back under the cover of the trees for this last part of the hike. This is a very steep trail, also a hidden rock-climbing area. You do encounter the mine which is cool to check out.

We made it back to the trail head at highway 29 safe and sound. It was a total of 10.5 miles and 2549 gained in elevation in a little over 4 hours.

Thanks to all who came with me on this hike, contributed photos, and fun! It was an adventure hike Mt. St. Helena. I have posted all the pictures and videos of my hike to this page.
