This is my first time doing the Northern California Six Packs of Peaks Challenge, and Mt. Umunhum was the first 1/6 peaks I completed thus far. A friend and I went Saturday, February 26th around 2:00 pm and finished around 5:30 pm. It was a little cloudy/overcast that day but the views around sunset were still stunning as the mountains looked blue and purple in the distance as we went downhill. Living in the San Jose area I see the skyline of Mt. Umunhum frequently and since moving from the East Coast I've referred to it as “the box hike” and “Mt. Um-hoo-noom” before I learned how to pronounce it correctly. I'm so glad I finally got the chance to follow my curiosity and complete this hike, as Mt. Umunhum has a rich history, plenty of birch leafed mountain mahogany, and endless views of the South Bay.
