My first hike as part of this challenge, but 4th time doing this hike. I started an hour later than planned, simply to lazy to get up at 5. As expected, I regretted that quickly once I hit the trail at 7:15 am and the sun came out strong quickly. This hike is easily divided into 4 segments. The first 1.5 miles to “First Water” is pretty exposed so it’s better do this early when it’s cold cool. The next leg to Orchard Camp gets more interesting and has shaded portions. I took a 5 min break at OC, which is the halfway point. The next portion to Manzanite Ridge is even more shaded and steeper at some small sections. This is my favorite part of the trail. Once at the ridge, it’s only 1.5 miles to Cosmic Cafe (opens at 10, so if you start too early you will miss the opportunity for a nice treat after the big 5000 ft climb). To get to the Mt Wilson sign, you have to continue another 0.4 miles behind the cafe. Cross the parking lot and follow the road and Echo Rock signs. Turn right after the large telescope (on your left) and follow the trail along the fence to the viewpoint with some chairs and a Mt Wilson Sign. I think most people don’t do this part, but I liked the little solitude away from the folks that made it to Cosmic Cafe by simply zipping up the 2 on a motor bike or car. After a nice cold Iced Tea at the cafe, I made my way down. I met some nice people including a dad with his chatty 9-yr old son also doing this challenge. It’s a long hike for a little boy. Truly remarkable.
