We started at Chantry flats. hiked the Sturtevant Falls section, stopped at Sturtevant camp to refill water, took a break at the halfway marker along the switchbacks, and then enjoyed the museum and lunch in the patio area. Hiked down Mt. Wilson trail to WInter Creek Trail, then selected Upper Winter Creek Trail back to Chantry Flats. Weather was great, we had clear skies right up until the late afternoon, and only a light breeze at the top of the peak.
The trail was well maintained, although there are sections that are quite exposed, and erosion is encroaching onto the trail. Inconsiderate hikers are leaving their toilet paper on the trail…why?!?!??!?!…but other than that, it's a beauty. We had great shade the whole morning hike up to the peak, and was only chilled as we approached the top, when a breeze started up.
After fInding the Geo marker at the end of the gravel parking lot, and the trailhead back down, we were impressed by the efforts of firefighters to keep the Oct 2017 fire away from the observatory. The recent burn is evident for only a small part of the Wilson Trail, but a grim reminder of the care we need to take while visiting. Hopefully, rains won't wash out that section this spring!
The Upper Winter Creek trail section was particularly well groomed, a nice gradual descent, and lovely in the late afternoon light. We could really stretch out the legs as we hiked! There were many grey squirrels foraging for acorns and birds chatting in the afternoon.
The restrooms in the Chantry Flats campground area were disgusting…I am not sure if it is more a reflection on the users or the maintenance crews. Pretty frustrating either way!
We are frequent hikers, and felt great all day, although we were tired at the end, but were exhilarated overall. We do use hiking poles which helps on the downhill in particular. I would recommend trail shoes/soles for better traction.
