I promised myself never ever to do Baldy via Register Ridge, especially hiking with my daughter.
Lo and behold, broke that promise.
We got to the top via Ski Hut trail. Rested well on the top. There was a joyful atmosphere, as always, with all of those who happily made it all the way up. Our plan was to take the Devil's Backbone down but midway we got the idea to cut through the Register Ridge…
I remember it super steep 3 years ago going up. This time, going down was quite challenging: sliding on the crumbling rocks with cliffs on both sides at some parts. My daughter and her boyfriend with their fear of heights were not happy. We made it almost unscathed. I did take a somewhat controlled fall. We also encountered an elderly couple going up – no poles, no water, and no proper hiking boots. We were concerned. They insisted on going up. At high noon. In the scorching sun…
That Register Ridge! Never ever will I go up or down that way. I have positively eliminated that trail for myself. I'll be sticking to those most traveled paths. Yet, I am glad we did it. That's how memories are made.
