Two years ago I interviewed Jeff “Legend” Garmire and we discussed the Long Trail. I knew the basic stats– mileage and vertical gain–but I had never hiked any of the Long Trail and had now appreciation for just how challenging it was.
Friday, I got a taste, hiking up Mount Mansfield via the Long Trail South. It's one of the few hikes where my arms and shoulders were sore from all of the scrambling. It was fun!
The weather was good, though too humid for my preference. One advantage of the Long Trail route is that there were very few other hikers on the trail. The summit itself was crawling with hikers who had summited from easier routes. Even with the people, the views were amazing.
