This was the first of what I've decided will be my 12 peaks of 2024. I selected Strawberry for my first one as it's easier and is best completed in cooler months. Strawberry is one of my go-to winter treks, particularly when Highway 2 is closed to many of the higher-altitude trails.
Although I've completed this hike before, it was a first-time trail for my friend and husband. We drove up to Redbox and started on the trail around 9:30 a.m. We wore long-sleeved shirts and gloves as it was a brisk morning in the shade but after the first couple of miles, we began climbing the steeper section, which was exposed and warmed us up (I wish I had worn layers). The steep scramble of the final section has been and continues to be my least favorite part of the hike, and this peak's increased popularity over the years has increased erosion. Take care with those final steps (down is worse than up in my experience).
At the top, no fewer than three summit signs. Since we were a group of three, each of us got to hold a sign.
Summary:
- Go in the cooler months
- Bring sun protection
- Bring lots of water
- Expect warmth on a sunny day
- Trekking poles recommended
- If you'd like to be cliched, bring a container of strawberries for a summit snack
