- I took a little stroll up to San Jacinto Peak on New Year's Day. I went up to Long Valley on the tram. Some people say that's cheating, but I'm going to get my money's worth out of my annual pass. I went up the Ranger Route, it cuts 4 miles off the hike, but it is steeper and involves route finding.
There was snow starting in Long Valley, not much, but some. On Monday microspikes weren't necessary, I only put them on at Miller Saddle, but could have done without. They were helpful on the way down on icy patches. There was only 6-7″ at the top, I prefer it with more snow.
As always it's a great hike in a wonderful place and a good way to start the New Year.
