With only two hours of sleep, we drove the park to start before the heat came. We started by 5 am and made it up the shortcut to the peak before the midday heat came. The peak doesn’t have any signage, you just know because it’s the highest hill and right below it is a radio/weather station. I had to direct some people to the peak because they walked right past it. We continued to do the loop because we thought it was easier than going back the way we came. Because of the heat, it took all day to finish the loop and even though, we brought lots of water, we still ran out by the end. Luckily, we met some backpackers who gave us an extra bottle. We finished before sunset. I got bit by horse flies that were in the shaded areas of the trail through my clothes. Note that the rangers told us the day before, they had to rescue people who were bitten by rattlesnakes and this is the first time that has happened in the park. We only saw a deer and wild boar/pigs.
