Ironically, I hiked Strawberry Peak long before I attempted any of the original 6 peaks. I hiked with Girls Who Hike LA way back in January. Our group leader Mia actually planned Strawberry Peak as a training hike in preparation for the 6 Pack of Peaks. I think the two most memorable features of this hike were definitely the weather and all the false peaks and scrambling. When we arrived to the trailhead at 6:00, it was 24 degrees. This is hands down the coldest weather I have ever, even still to this date, ever hiked in. I could not believe how cold it was. The weather definitely warmed up but I will never forget seeing “Valyermo 24 degrees” on my weather app. I have asthma and the cold was definitely a concern for me. I distinctly also remember my mom freaking out when I told her I was doing this hike. She thought the cold weather was going to kill me. I also remember that this hike was incredibly deceiving. The first half of the trail seemed so easy. The incline is doable, there wasn't difficult, steep, or slippery gravel of any kind. I didn't think it was that difficult at first at all but then you reach a point where you start to climb up and down the false peaks. The most incredibly evil feature of this mountain has to be all the false peaks. I remember we kept seeing other girls from our group who we thought were at the end and then around another corner would be another peak and another scramble. Psychologically it was defeating I remember. I didn't think that we would ever get to the end, but we did eventually. And the scrambling! Oh My God! The scrambling at the end!!! That was killer! And to date, I don't think that I've climbed anything else that had the degree of scrambling that Strawberry Peak required. Even though I've now done all the 8 peaks, I still think Strawberry Peak was one of the toughest climbs I've ever done. Oh yeah, and no site of any strawberries anywhere. Just kidding!
