To start, a permit is required for this hike. It can be purchased for $10 per person ($11 after processing fees) online. I've completed this hike more times than I can count on two hands and the process varies each year. The instructions (online) say the gate doesn't open until 8am, which would lead one to believe they cannot arrive or start until then. Long story short, I always enter the gate (not blocked, but not manned) between 5 and 7am. I ensure that I have a printed version of my permit or the email confirmation available to show if needed. Sometimes, I'm greated after my hike at my car by the Tribal Police other times I'm asked to show my permit as I'm leaving. The Tribal Police are very polite and respectful when asking for proof, so return the favor! 😉

Today, the road in was a little muddy and had some large puddles to drive through. I started my hike at about 7:15am. The truck trail leading up to the summit was a bit sandy and damp, but not muddy. I didn't encounter any significant snow until right around 2.75 miles. This is where Sukat Rd runs into Hot Springs Mountain Road. After that the snow is pretty consistent with 2 to 4 inches in various places. Easy to travel though. I put on microspikes at that jucntion.

As I approached the final half mile or so, there was far less snow, and basically none at the summit. It was a very gloomy day on the trail. No rain, but lots of clouds and fog. The boulder at the summit area was a bit wet and slippery for me so I opted not to climb up it. Besides, I can count on more that one hand how many times I have already climbed it. Climbing it wasn't worth the risk of slipping and possibly getting injured. Besides there was no view to be had! 😉 😉

All in all a great on the trail. I only saw two other hikers heading up as I was coming down. The snow was melting fast on my way down and the snow became very slushy and wet. I'd venture to say that after the next system comes through on Thursday/Friday it will get an inch or so more of snow.

I logged 10.3 miles, but I did do a bit of wandering while near the summit and the old lookout tower. Temps today began in the low 40's. Likely mid 40's at the summit with no wind. And, low 50's when I made it back down just before noon.
