After another rainy night of camping, it took a while to clean off the mud and dry out my gear. I was still in awe of my hike up Humphreys the day before. On my way to Oleary, I looked to the top of Humphreys to see it covered in white where it had snowed or hailed the night before. What a beautiful sight! Humphreys being a hard act to follow, Oleary did not disappoint. I got started at about 10am. Seeing the lava flows at the beginning of the hike frozen in time was amazing! Lava field stacked two and three stories high and right up to the edge of an old growth ponderosa forest is not something you see everyday. The hike is on easy terrain up an old forest road but the climb is significant. Amazing views at the top of Sunset Crater and a birds eye view of the lava field. In fact, the whole volcanic field in the surrounding area is very apparent. The views of Humphreys from this hike are incredible! This was hike #3 in my personal challenge to do three mountains in three days. I did it! This completes my Six Pack of Peaks Challenge as well.
