We had to park on the neighborhood street, I think it might be El Miramonte Avenue, where there is enough parking space even if you do have to walk back a way. Anyway, that’s we're here for, to walk!
Opening the car doors, we were met by a flock of parrots all talking in the trees. One of the Red Crowned Parrots flew down to take a closer look and call to us. What a great way to start the day, although perhaps annoying to the neighbors. Dozens of rather big, green and red birds, all talking. Very Social.
Weather was cool and partly cloudy, perfect for walking.
The trail was in good condition, very walkable, but there is evidence of the damage done by water from recent storms. The trail crews seem to be busy, and they do a great job.
We encountered lots of hikers and runners on the trail and made some friends along the way, one even stopping to help us and walk with us the last couple miles in the dark.
The views are great on the way both up and down, and there is the sound of water rushing down the mountain much of the way.
We started hiking about 8 and finished in the dark around 6.
So, yes, great day, starting with parrots, continuing with the historic Observatory on top and back down in the dark. On top, the Hooker Telescope is one of the most important instruments in the history of astronomy, so take a look at it while you're up there, like Einstein did. The Cosmic Cafe was closed for some reason. No chile for us!
We highly recommend this hike. Challenging but doable.
