In choosing my six hikes for the Bay Area Six Pack of Peaks Challenge, my idea was to arrange these in perceived order of difficulty. I perceived incorrectly in putting Mount Saint Helena as my fourth hike, when it really should have been second (second only to Umunhum). While this beautiful mountain has the highest elevation of the peaks, it also starts higher. This was great exercise, but most of the bath was wide and relatively mild. The greatest challenge we encountered was the foot or so of snow that still covered the trail toward the top. My tennis shoes were sopping wet by the time I got back. But what you get for the most part is a nice, gradual 10-mile trek up to the chilly summit, with views that I'm told are breathtaking. We couldn't see much due to the fog. On the way down, however, we a good look at the beautiful crags and peaks that make up Robert Louis Stevenson Park. And, with the daunting Mt. Sizer and Rose Peak still to come, it was kind of nice to get something of a breather with this modest but rewarding wine country mountain. This was less a grueling challenge than a chance to take in some stunning green countryside and breathe in some bracing air (and get hailed on for the first time since I can remember).
