We should not have been out there. When we arrived the power was out and the guy at the kiosk said there was no charge for parking. The visitor center was closed and we needed permits. He gave them to us no question. Off we went. This hike was insane. The wind was insane. We could see the smoke from the kincade fire looming in, but our air quality seemed alright. We kept at it. Made it too the top to be blown around. Couldn’t stop and eat, too windy. We walked for 8 hours straight before stopping at one of the camps in our way down. Made it to the bottom just after sunset in about 10 hours to be greeted by a ranger. The park had been closed 6 hours for high wind fire risk. He had been waiting for us, he said they normally could send a helicopter up to look for hikers, but the high winds wouldn’t allow it. ???? oops, not our best decision. But we made it. One peak to go.
