The weather was perfect; sunny and warm, but not too hot. No snow was on the trail. Actually about 99% was gone from all surrounding areas too… The ‘trail' is really an all dirt road. It is not technical at all, but that is not to say that it is easy. The climb is steep, especially the first two miles. After that the road is rolling and much more doable. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. The road ends up at the top where there is the old look out tower. Then there is a single foot trail that leads to the “real” summit…a huge boulder. The altitude survey marker and the official wood sign naming the Hot Springs Mountain Peak are on top of the boulder. To get on this boulder, one must first climb a ladder that is leaning against it. From the top of the ladder you continue your climb by pulling yourself up with the help of 2 knotted ropes and some rebar. I was hiking alone. I attempted to pull myself up but I was just too nervous. I am closing in on my 70th birthday and stand just barely grazing 5 feet. I climbed the ladder and looked up at the ropes. The sun was shining straight into my eyes. I got down and looked for another way. I went back and tried again. Finally, I began to walk away when a group of hikers that I had passed before befriended me and encouraged me to come back with them to try again. The sturdiest of them all said that he would assist me and make sure that I didn't fall. So I went back with them and gave it a try. Daniel gave me a hand while all encouraged. With their help and encouragement I got to do the “official” summit, (though, I believe the hike to the tower is perfectly legitimate as the summit of this peak). My new friends gave me an extra lift today that made me feel absolutely joyful. I just love meeting fellow hikers!
