And that’s a wrap! I closed out the Appalachian Six-Pack with the easiest trail on the list, North Carolina’s Black Balsam Knob. I was wondering, honestly, why such a short hike was an option. I got my answer pretty quickly: the views are just *that* breathtaking. 360-degree panoramas, with famously beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I went for sunset, and because the hike is so short it’s easy to get back to your car and not have to deal with a tough return trip in the dark. I do recommend at least having a headlamp with you, as the trail is pretty rocky and you can lose footing.
The only downside to Black Balsam Knob is the sheer volume of crowds. There are some groups that number well over a dozen, as well as a ton of professional photoshoots (engagements, weddings, family portraits) so you won’t be in for much solitude especially if you choose to go at sunrise or sunset. The views, however, are really worth it. You’re above the tree line, and the mountains are visible in every direction. To the east at sunset, you can really tell why they call it the Blue Ridge Mountains.
With this wrapped, I’m turning my eye back west for the final two San Diego Six-Pack peaks. That’s not until December, and my aerobic endurance definitely needs to improve a bit before I can tackle 13 miles of High Point. Planning to stay focused and hope the Peloton amounts to good cross-training!
