Hiked on 3/6/21. 11.6 miles, 2,113 ft. elevation gain. Hike took 4:59. Summited Sawmill Mountain as a part of the Three Peaks Challenge, which also includes Mount Pinos and Grouse Mountain. I thought the best views of the hike (north into the Grapevine) were early on, on the way to Mt. Pinos, by taking a right off of the main trail about 0.8 miles in to get to an overlook. In early March, after Mt. Pinos on the way to Sawmill, and afterwards on the way to Grouse, snow covered the entire trail, and required a good amount of trailfinding. If hiking in snow (no worries later on in the year), I would recommend bringing a GPS to make sure you don’t wind up too far off trail, and microspikes were a necessity. There’s a decent crowd for the quick hike to Mt. Pinos, but it really clears out afterward. Overall, not too hard of a hike, and an interesting one, with the up-and-down essentially leading to five mountain summits through the entire hike (and the summit marker on Sawmill was one of the coolest I’ve seen). Cool to summit the tallest peaks in Ventura and Kern Counties in one go!
