This year Sawmill replaces Mt Pinos as a #SixPackofPeak to make it more challenging by adding 4 more miles and 800 more ft of elevation gain. As I was returning back to SoCal from Yosemite, I took advantage of this opportunity to stop and bag another SixPack hike. You’ll arrive at Pinos from the Nordic Base trailhead after 1.8 miles and no doubt want to stop to take selfies. Once you pass Pinos and make it to the viewpoint, you’ll hike through some open space, then descend into the valley before ascending again to reach Sawmill. There are no signs, so look for a bunch of sticks on the ground that indicate a clear path to your right. The path goes for another 1/4 mile to where you eventually see the landmark stack of rocks. No sign or USGS marker (that I could find), just another selfie opportunity. For those with more time and energy you can continue westward to Grouse Peak to complete the 3-2-1 challenge and add another 3 miles and 700 ft elevation to your hike.
