We had a group of 12, join the Outdoor Adventures+ family on a trek to Sitton Peak for our first official hike of the SoCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge and our first hike of 2023. Started off as a cold 38°F morning in the Cleveland National Forest (San Mateo Canyon Wilderness.) Upon arrival to the parking lot, it looked like everyone had the same idea to hike Sitton Peak that day (you do need an Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass displayed in your vehicles to park in the parking lot or the street. If you forget, like I did, they sell them at the Candy Store.) In a sense it was understandable, especially after the last two storm systems that hit California, wet and cold days that kept us indoors, it was a great time to hit the trails. We started our ascension to Sitton Peak via the Sitton Peak Truck Trail, beginning at the Bear Canyon Loop Trailhead (located West of the Ortega Oaks 74 Candy Store and Goods.) 0.1 miles in, be sure to sign the registration form to let the National Forest system know you are there. It was a steady incline to the top, with lots of small patches of mud, lots of lose rocks, as well as small streams of water falling into the creek in the canyons. The trail is well marked and very shaded for the most part Once you're about 0.5 miles away from the pay close attention to the signs, if you're not looking for your turn you'll miss it. This is where you'll start your accent to the peak, the steepest section of the whole hike but we'll worth it. Upon arrival to the summit, on a clear day you'll see Catalina Island to the West and the snow capped mountains of the San Gabriel's and San Bernardino's. Two prominent peaks are Mt. Baldy and San Gorgonio, the tallest and most challenging mountains and also a part of the SoCal Six Pack of Peaks Challenge. Overall a beautiful day with great company, we even ran into some friends and made new ones along the way.
