These hills were home to the Payomkawichum Tribe which means “the Westerners”, that migrated here from the Great Basin almost Eight Thousand years ago.
The had a lot in common with the Cahuillas of the San Gabriel mountains.
The name “Luiseño has been adhered to them by the Spanish missionaries that settled at San Luis Rey in 1798. Did you know the Luiseño used California buckeye toxins to stun fish in order to catch them?
