Sitton Peak – hip busting spider webs – oh my!
Bear Canyon → Bear Ridge loop
June 8, 2021 – Bonus Solo Hike
This was technically Hike #2 (chronologically) in my SoCal Six+ Pack series and a perfect prelude to Ontario and Baldy planned for later that week.
Your friendly neighborhood spiderweb clearing girl
I was the first one on the trail that morning (according to the registration log) – a fact that was quickly confirmed when I started getting one face full of spider webs that stretched across the trail after another, and another, and another… ??? I quickly developed what I thought was a clever technique to clear the webs ahead of my face (sorry spiders) by constantly swinging my right hiking pole in front of me. Yeah… This completely altered my gait and it took me weeks to fully recover from the hip pain and severe inflammation that ensued after just a few miles. Spiders: 1 Me: 0 but happy to take one for the team for all the hikers that followed that day. ?
Setting aside the spiderweb debacle, I really enjoyed this hike! The steep and slippery final 1/4 mile to the summit was a little challenging, especially with a now busted hip, but the spectacular 360 views at the top were well worth it (see elevation profile pic). It was a clear enough day that I could see the ocean in the distance. An inquisitive lizard that was very intrigued by the bright red whistle on my pack kept me company at the top.
Beware of the very fast moving traffic on 74 – it comes whipping around a blind corner in each direction. Crossing back over to the parking lot was akin to a game of frogger. 🙂
Great Hike!
