We parked in lot on the Ortega Highway across from the candy store. Didn’t need Adventure Pass because it was a holiday. You could buy one at the store, otherwise. Restrooms were in the lot. Clean. Weather was wet and overcast. No real rain though. Some sun came thru. Dressed in layers. There were clear signs to start of trailhead just west of the candy store on the same side. Fairly wide paths. Somewhat rocky terrain. Gradual incline. about midway I reached 4 Corners where a few other trails converge. Nice little plateau where one can break. Followed signs from there to Sitton Peak. The last half a mile or so to summit is a total scramble. Hands and knees. Poles totally helped me especially with the muddy wet ground. As we ascended, the cloud cover and cold rolled in. Very drizzly and wet. We summited around 2pm. Then the rain came. We quickly ate. Put layers back on. A rain jacket would have been nice. I had on a poly filled puffer jacket. It helped. Coming down the scramble was a little treacherous. Poles helped so much. But, I lost my footing on slippery rocks and fell down. No real injury tho. After the scramble, the descent was good. Saw blooming flowers. No real wildlife. Pretty views. This was a great hike to start our challenge.
