If it wasn't for the thick smoke that had rolled in the night before (from Oregon and Canada fires), this would have been my favorite of the challenge hikes so far.
The trail was perfect. Definitely challenging due to the incline, but a nice dirt trail pretty much the whole way.
In the morning we started just below a blanket of smoke. We paced ourselves a little slower than usual so that we weren't pushing our lungs too hard. We weren't sure it was going to be healthy enough air quality to make it all the way to the top, but we kept moving slow and steady.
It was kind of sad; being able to tell that the views are supposed to be spectacular, but veiled by wildfire smoke.
We still enjoyed the hike and each other's company. And eventually we found ourselves just above the smoke for the second half of our trek. Still no real views, but at least breathing was easier.
Closer to the top we greeted by butterflies everywhere, and they made us feel quite welcome.
We made the summit in good time and enjoyed a well earned snack break. When we first got there, North Sister on one side and Mt Washington on the other side seemed to be flirting with us from behind the smokey curtains. After about 15 minutes though, the curtains were closed and we were back to our grey surroundings.
The trek down was pleasant and allowed for great conversations, as it was pretty smooth sailing for the most part.
I definitely plan on doing this one again once the smokey skies are gone.
