I think today every peak in the challenge had snow, but Umunhum is the closest one to me, so I went there.  The Summit road was closed because of snow and ice, so I parked at Almaden Quicksilver and walked over from there. Lots of people checking out the snow, but by the half mile mark, I was alone and would not see another person until my way down.  Worse part was there were no tracks, so I had to break the trail for everyone after me, which really slowed me down.

The Wood Trail had no more than a couple inches of snow at the deepest parts, but there were several large trees that had fallen across the trail.  Barlow Road started to have some deeper snow, maybe up to 6” or so, as well as many more downed trees. The Summit trail was actually the hardest, with 6-12” of snow most of the way and even a few patches that were much deeper! Of course, more fallen trees to navigate.

  1. Nice! I was on nearby Black Mountain. Thankfully, a few people before me had broken the trail. (I would have been tempted to walk Mt Umunhum Road, since it was closed!)

    1. They were actually letting people walk up the road after they cleared it, kept it closed to cars and bikes, but I didn’t see that until I had reached the bottom. Saw your hike log, awesome pictures! Hopefully some of the other peaks got climbed yesterday so people can share those snowy pictures as well!
