First summit of the season – I may have overestimated my fitness level…..  What a weird spring! All week it was in the 70's, then the day I take off work it is in the 40's and 50's. I started out with a big cloud bank hanging over the Wasatch and sending down the occasional swirling snowflake. The gate to the trailhead still isn't open, which means you have to park on the road, adding at least a quarter mile of steep pavement to the trailhead (.5 mi roundtrip). It was cold when I started between 9:30 and 10, but the cold also slowed the flow of water in the creeks and running down the trail. I was super slow and it took me 2 1/2 hours to summit, but the silver lining was that the clouds moved out just prior to my summit and made for a more comfortable descent. There were a LOT of people on the trail for a Thursday morning. Lots of trail runners, dogs, retirees, and a large group of  Germans ? Maybe there's a new local hiking club? Made quicker work of the descent and the whole hike took me just over 4 hours. Warming up also meant a lot more water running down the trail on the way down after noon. Not enough to get muddy, just enough to watch your footing. Overall, a reall enjoyable hiking day!
