This was a solo hike. I thought the trail started near the main lodge (I was wrong). I ended up forging my own route up a combination of mountain bike trails (they weren't open yet), ski runs and utility roads until I reached Pine Marten Lodge. From there, I donned micro spikes and headed straight up the snow. About a quarter mile from the summit I had a scree scramble, and once at the top there is a well-defined trail that winds around the summit.
I made my way over to the summit lift and discovered the actual trail… which I gratefully followed down to the Sunrise Express area. There were a few sections of snow that I had to traverse, but nothing too technical. I did don microspikes for two of them mainly because I was alone.
I ran into a total of about six other hikers on the trail on my way down. It was mid-week, but I was surprised by how few people were hiking here.
