I would consider this the perfect Winter/Spring hike. It is mostly open chaparral, so I think it might be too warm in Summer/Fall. The section we did was very user friendly: not too long, not too steep, well maintained trail, parking lot, and clean restrooms. The backpack camp along the way intrigued us (maybe next time?) and the views of the bay area at every turn were inspiring. The flowers are starting to put on a show, the trees were budding, birds were plentiful, and although we saw a family of deer and a 4 foot gopher snake, we managed to avoid a lonely coyote a fellow hiker said was searching for a date. I would consider this a great hike to do with kids, beginner hikers, and everyone else. The rocks at the peak make for nice picnic seats. Thank you, Black Mountain!
