Was planning to take on Baldy, Ontario, and Cucamonga in one day, but decided last minute to take on the beast, Gorgonio. Having did Vivian Creek Trail twice last year for training and then the A16 24-hour 3-Peak Challenge, we wanted to try the South Fork approach. Although longer than Vivian Creek (21.3 vs 18), South Fork/Mine Shaft Saddle approach is more beautiful and scenic. South Fork is also less popular and we didn't see a single person till the summit. The hike didn't seem like a grind and you are looking at the mountain range most of the time, where as you don't get your first look at Gorgonio until well after High Camp. I am a big fan of loop trails so you don't see the same thing twice, and the return through Dollar Lake saddle did not disappoint. We started at 4:15 am and returned to the vehicle around 12:34 pm. It did get hot on the return and that's where I used most of the 4L of water I was carrying. Probably could have gotten away with 3L, but I didn't want to chance it. Did not see any water above Dry Lake (5.5 miles from TH, 6 miles from summit) and Dollar Lake/South Fork Meadows on the return.

Hi Stephen, South Fork trail via Sky High Trail is my favorite. We are camping at Dry Lake this weekend and were contemplating the peak depending on snow crossings. Is it doable without spikes or do you recommend them? Any snow crossings up to the plane crash monument? Kind of want to plan ahead. Thanks in advance if you can respond.
Hi Jean, no need for spikes. There were some snow crossings, but they were 100% passable without spikes. We were at the summit around 9:00 am so the snow was still iced/hard and there were nice sized footprints to step in.
