I love everything about this hike. The best part is how the weather and views surprise and delight.
I arrived at the parking lot at 6:45am and only saw one car in the lot. It was dark, cold and wet. I needed my headlamp for almost the entire climb, until the first major viewpoint. It was moody and foggy, but the skies cleared for some views.
It rained most of the way until right before the ropes section, the rain stopped. I wasn't sure if it would be too slippery, but I could see two guys taking photos at the top, the rain ceased and it's as wet as it normally is in the winter here, so I kept going.
The ropes weren't in the best shape, but I made it to the summit and felt so glad I came. Just me, the two guys at the summit and a few birds chirping around for food.
As I was driving home, I had this reflection: at least the weather isn't boring. It may be cold, dark, damp and ominous much of the time, but it's always moving and changing. Light finds a way to peak through.
Also! Footnote: things I bring to hike with on rainy days:
- Hand warmers
- Two pairs of gloves for Storm King (one for the ropes which get wet, one for after to warm up)
- HydroFlask with coffee for a summit drink
