Mount Chocorua: April 9th, 2022
We started our way up to summit Mount Chocorua in Albany, NH via the Champney Falls Trail. This was our First Summit of Mount Chocorua for the Six Pack of Peaks: New England Challenge, Fourth Peak do my partner and my Fifth Peak for 2022.
It was cloudy with some light cold rains at lower elevations, as we got to higher elevation it ended up being a mix of rain, sleet and snow mix. Trail was wet, muddy with some ice and snow at lower elevations but as we got to higher elevations the trail was ice covered from previous thaws and refreeze. Summit had patches of snow and ice. Definitely would recommend good traction for the ice covered trails. We used spikes for much of this hike. When was nearing summit winds had picked up and lots of cloud cover from low hanging clouds. Hail fell and changed to snow which started to accumulate. Not much in the way of views.
We were at the summit long enough to take some pictures and our summit photo op. Then headed back to the Trailhead.
It was definitely a challenging hike due to weather and trail conditions. A couple times we thought we were near summit and weren’t. Trail offered some good rock scrambles and overall it was an amazing experience hiking with winterish conditions.
Definitely recommend this hike to others and worth the trip but one needs to be prepared.
