The San Bernardino Peak parking lot was packed. I managed to find an open spot though. This hike was also a late start – midday start instead of an early morning start. However, this hike would be a chance to get to the peak before sunset and then after dark to see if I could spot the comet that was on the news. The weather was sunny. There were a lot of hikers on the trail. I managed to reach the peak at around 6:30 pm, and I had the summit all to myself for a while until two other hikers who were camping at Limber Pine came up. We took each others pictures. Then they headed down while I stayed up there for a while. Initially I was thinking of waiting until the sunset but I decided to head down while it was still daylight and try to spot the comet somewhere lower but hopefully without the light pollution. I made good progress going down, I overtook the two hikers who were camping at Limber Pine. I made it to the meadows after the Columbine Spring junction and it was already night and the stars came out. I turned off the headlight and tried to spot the comet where it should be in reference to the Big Dipper. Unfortunately I did not see it that night – though I would later see it a few nights later though not on one of the Six Pack of Peak hikes. Despite failing to see the comet, I still considered the sunset hike to the summit and the night hike back to the car a success.
