It was a dark & stormy morning.  5 am on the road, we were and we weren't sure the weather would hold up for us, as the dark clouds were looming over Mt. Monadnock.  6 am arrival was with a pleasant surprise.  The clouds pushed out and the air was a cool 61-ish.  Slapped on the bug spray, put the hiking shoes on the feet, strapped on the hydration pack & neck/face mask went around the neck for precautionary measures during this COVID time.

Pumpelly is a challenging trek.  Short straight aways to tease you at the beginning, but soon enough the elevation starts to hit.  Rock stairs, loose rock trails, boulders to climb over.  Lots of rock!  Keep the feet moving and the journey won't be too bad.  The weather was cool in the woods, very few mosquitoes and the breaks of sunshine in the clearings were welcomed.  The climb as you get close to the summit of Monadnock are a bit tricky, but keep your hands free to help up some of the boulder climbing you will do.  Quick note – look for the rock formations or pyramids to ensure you stay on course … super helpful!

The peak of the summit is always a reward on Monadnock, no matter the time of the season.  Blustering winds today, and a bit on the cooler side.  Hiking pants and windbreaker were good choices today.  The trek down is slow, challenging one, so take your time.  The climb up taxes the quads, glutes and hams and the decent will make your knees feel every step.

Good time overall for the 1st test for Six Peaks – NE.  They say give yourself 4 1/2 hrs to hike it and enjoy it.  4 hr 27 min later … well worth it!
