Despite gaining altitude over a relatively a short distance, the effect is nominal because it’s a very well engineered trail. Many switch backs. I encountered only a few hikers and a hunter on the way up, but going down was a different story. Several large hiking groups. Everyone was friendly enjoying the outdoor experience. By the way, highway 2 from the 138 is open to the trailhead.
