Me and my friend started our hike at 8:30am under sunny skies. It was definitely a warm day but the inner canyon and trail switchbacks where very well shaded and the air was cool and damp. The first and last 1.5/2 miles were much more open with less overall shade coverage but still had some good shade pockets every so often! The final stint of the trail is just walking up the road but that allowed for some good views on both the N, W, and S sides of the mountain! Right before the steeper switch backs near to top of the actual trial a nice tall aspen grove was producing what I can only describe as the scent Bath and Bodyworks wishes their Christmas candles smell like. I’m not sure if it was the heat causing extra sap to ooze out of the trees or what but it was probably the best smell I have ever smelt in my life!! Quick note there is one stretch of trail in the main canyon that is WILDLY over grown! The foliage is easily 4feet tall and makes following the trial kinda tricky for a little distance but it wasn’t terrible you just have to pay attention to your footing because I did stumble over some rocks and sticks I couldn’t see through the leaves. Our hike was 3 hours on the dot with a total elevation gain of 2,190ft! Great hike!
