Unable to get any hikes in during July, then the fires, we opted to try Sitton. Ugh. We thought we had the temps right, but we were wrong. Not mid-80’s, instead mid-90s. Hardly any shade and that scramble/climb to the summit was tough!
The trail itself was obvious until the turnoff to the peak; you basically climb water runoff trails. The summit is tiny with rocks. The rock formations on the way there were cool. Additionally this trail literally had the most animal poop than any other we’ve hiked… dog, horse, and something that liked berries.
On our way back on the trail I did not do well – much too hot. I had to give up my pack to my husband And frequently rest on what was a fairly flat trail. At one point of rest we heard “footsteps” – we didn’t stick around to see what might have popped out from the brush/tree area next to us. A bit startling.
The woman at the Candy’s store (thank goodness for air conditioning!) told us the week before 3 people had to be rescued from the trail and its heat. 3 other hikers were out this day (hello Donatello!) – she made note to talk to the ranger if she didn’t see them within an hour. Sadly, two days later the Holy Fire started.
