This was a difficult and less enjoyable hike- I had to get some time and space from it before even logging it. Unlike most summits where you mostly gain elevation until you reach the summit, then lose elevation as you go down, this hike has you going up and down throughout the entire hike all the way to the end. (it honestly killed my knees even with trekking poles- and I’ve never had knee pain or any issues). The “shortcut” section of the trail is grueling- I wish it was truly a shortcut and there was a longer, more reasonable option. Most of the “trail” felt like it was originally a road for four wheel drive vehicles to access areas of the park, and thus would go straight up or down the mountain instead of switchbacks. I did see vehicles on several occasions. The road is dusty and rocky. You would miss the “summit” if you’re not paying attention, since it’s off the trail when you’re on a ridge and isn’t obvious, especially since you’re continuously going up and down. I’m glad this one is done.
