Oh how I loathe this trail. In all of the ways that one can summit the 2nd most hiked mountain in the world, our group chose the LONGEST ROUTE POSSIBLE.
Now, living close to this mountain, I have climbed it numerous times and enjoyed them all ( except for the first and only other time I mistakenly thought it was a good idea to take the Pumpelly trail ). Head to the mountain, spend a few hours hiking, enjoy the summit and views, chat with other hikers, over all good times and you then head down. Just a couple of short hours later you feel accomplished for hiking a hard mountain and you're now enjoying your well deserved ice cream at Kimball's ( because who doesn't get ice cream after a strenuous hike? And Kimball's is the go to place for amazing ice cream… I mean, you're literally right down the road, it would be un-American not to )
That is of course unless you choose to hike the Pumpelly trail which is not only the LONGEST trail possible and will literally take you ALL DAY long ( unless your one of those amazing trail runner peeps… hats off to you and your endurance! ); but your also on the WRONG side of the mountain to visit Kimball's! ( sad panda )
The highlight of the day was hanging out with my bad@ss hiker girls. Although it started pouring on us 3/4 up the mountain, (which made for an even longer trek down); we made the absolute most of the wet situation and were able to laugh the entire way down. 9.5 soaking wet miles later, we had completed our journey and I was so happy to see my truck.
All in all it was a great day full of laughter and memories. As much as I hate this trail ( mostly just due to its length ) it is a beautiful way to the summit with some stunning views ( at least on days when it isn't pouring ). I do recommend this trail; just not if your short on time or you're trying to beat the weather.
