With renewed energy following my Yosemite hikes to Half Dome and Clouds Rest last week, I set off for an attempt to summit San Bernardino in record time. The first 2 miles are steep and unrelenting, but then it start to open up and level out into manzanita fields. This is where calfsleeves or long pants will protect your legs. The trail starts to climb again with 2 miles to go, and that last push is the steepest so just dig in and reach the top! Along the way you’ll pass through Limber Pine campground and Wheelbarrow Junction, both good places to rest and refuel. At 6 miles up, before you reach Limber Pines there’s a small stream next to one of the switchbacks, a good water source for your filtered hydration system.
Decided to head over to SB East Peak for extra mileage and elevation before heading back down, stopping for a quick selfie at the Washington monument
