We started off early and headed for North Wilson Trail. After hiking about half a mile, we turned back. The trail was very overgrown, and it was clear it had not been maintained in quite some time. We decided we did not want to trudged through the vegetation.
Disappointed, but not discouraged, we headed back to Midgley bridge where we picked up Wilson Mountain Trail #10. It was clear and well marked. I would break the trail down like this:
1. The Flat – this was the first 1/4 mile of the trail. This portion is an easy walk and you’ll see the marker denoting the directions of the different trails.
2. The Climb – the trail becomes rocky, the switchbacks are steady, shade is plentiful if you start early, and the views are lovely
3. The Plateau – the trail flattens out for a bit, and you’ll see the Wilson Mountain first bench marker where the North Wilson Trail meets up
4. The Jungle – another set of steady switchbacks largely covered with vegetation that is overgrown in some areas
5. The Forest – when you clear the jungle, you step out into what looks like a trail in Flagstaff, the temps are cooler and the shade returns. Don’t miss the sign showing the left turn to the Sedona overlook. When you reach the open area with the tall pines, you are almost finished
If I’m honest, the way down was more difficult. It took longer than we expected due to the loose rock, and the shade had disappeared. It took us almost 6 hours, we finished about 12:30 and it was a sunny 95°. All in all, a good hike.
