This was the first time in this area for me and I did not expect the pine forest. Yes, you do start the hike immediately losing elevation only to have to gain it back and more, but the whole walk through the forest can make it worth it. I decided to do more than Sawmill so I was adding additional mileage and elevation changes. After Sawmill I headed over to Pinos then turned around to head back to the vehicle. On the way back I explored off the main route and finished off with heading up to Grouse. The day was great, the weather was nice and I had the trail mostly to myself.
